The official Virginia Beach Flower and Lotus Festival originated in the 1950s around Lotus Garden Park on Sandbridge Road, where the native American yellow lotus (Nelumbo lutea) blooms. While the grand multi-day community parades and queen-crowning events scaled back decades ago, a local tradition is kept alive by the nearby church.
